Why I built EqualAIzr

On my own

A few years ago my business closed, and I found myself facing legal problems without a lawyer. I couldn't afford one, and the help that existed wasn't built for someone in my position.

I'll be honest about how that felt. I was powerless, and I was desperate for help.

What I tried first

I turned to AI. It helped me get moving. It explained things and it drafted things. But it took me a while to learn to use it well. A tool that sounds confident isn't the same as a tool you can check.

I also learned how much work sits behind every letter. Each reply raised new questions, and I needed a way to keep track of all of it.

What changed

The answer wasn't more AI. It was discipline.

The AI would forget what had happened before, so I started keeping my own record. Spreadsheets of every document, every date, every person, and every point that didn't add up.

Then I built rules around that record. Check every fact against its source. Be clear about what you know and what you only think. Read the other side's letters properly before you reply.

That structure made the difference. The law didn't get simpler. But I could finally see my own situation clearly, and show where every point came from.

What I realised

Somewhere along the way I realised I was onto something bigger than my own situation.

Most people dealing with a legal problem alone aren't short of intelligence or determination. They're short of order. They have a pile of letters, emails and notes, and nothing that puts it into a shape anyone can use. Legal software is built for lawyers. General AI sounds confident but can't show its working.

Why I could build it

Before this, I spent more than fifteen years leading digital products in UK government and large organisations, making complicated services work for ordinary people. I've also run my own business.

I didn't plan for any of that to lead here. But when I needed it, that experience is what let me turn a way of surviving into a product.

Who it's for

EqualAIzr is for people who can't spend thousands of pounds on legal fees and still deserve to be taken seriously. It doesn't replace a lawyer. It's the layer before one: the organising, the record-keeping and the understanding that should be open to everyone.
